Make your blog more inclusive

Darren Rowse of problogger writes a great post about making your blog more inclusive. He writes for bloggers and how to make money with blogging, but what he says echoes lots of things I/we have thought and written about when designing for online communities. Read his full post in Nine Ways to Make your Blog More Inclusive.

  1. Be Aware of the Language You Use
  2. Consider a Glossary
  3. Mix Up the Levels at which you Write
  4. Highlight Posts for First Timers
  5. Educate Users in Blogging (and RSS)
  6. Create Spaces for Different Levels of Users to form community
  7. Encourage Participation and Interactivity
  8. Leave Room for Other Experts
  9. Create a Culture of Inclusivity

When he talks about creating a culture of inclusivity, I relate it to modeling the culture and learning you are trying to stimulate. What were those wonderful words from Ghandi? "Be the change that you want to see in the world".

Yes, the way you do things matters...

  • My name is Bev Trayner and I live in Setúbal, Portugal. The focus of my research and practice is designing for learning in distributed communities. I am particularly interested in connecting people in international communities. Key words are: communities of practice, learning, meaning-making, inclusion, multiliteracies, Portugal, and Web2.0 technologies. Keeping a blog helps me navigate my way through different practices and world views. Phronesis includes pondering on the specifics and the universal. It follows on from my previous blog "Em duas línguas".
